Privacy Policy
This policy explains what the Life in UK Made Easy website (lifeinuk-madeeasy.com) collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain English. If anything is unclear, email us and we will explain it.
Who we are
Life in UK Made Easy is published by Gaurav Dewan, an independent developer. For UK data protection law we are the data controller for the data described below. You can reach us at hello@somewherein.city.
What we collect
You do not need to give your name to use the site. When you first visit, the site creates an anonymous account, which is only a random identifier. Here is everything we store.
Anonymous account identifier (a Firebase user ID)
To keep your progress together on one account.
Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore · until you delete your account
Your email address, if you give it
To send you a sign-in link, so you can use your progress and your subscription on any device, and to match your payment to your account.
Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Square · until you delete your account
Your answers, study progress and mock test runs
To work out your readiness score and show what to study next.
Cloud Firestore, under users/{your id}/…, and in your browser · until you delete your account
Subscription status: free trial or paid, trial end date, next charge date, the Square customer and subscription identifiers, and the amounts and dates of payments, refunds and disputes
To give you full access while your subscription is active, and to keep the records UK tax law asks for.
Cloud Firestore and Square · while the subscription lasts; payment records for 6 years
Usage events: which pages you open, which buttons you tap, your scores — only if you accept
To see which parts of the site help people pass, and fix the parts that do not.
Mixpanel, EU data residency · only after you press Accept; switch off in Settings
The ad you came from (the Google click id and campaign name) — only if you accept
To know which adverts bring people who find the site useful, so we do not pay for the others.
a cookie in your browser for 90 days, your order record, and Google Ads · only after you press Accept
We never see or store your card number. We do not collect your contacts, your location, your photos or your health data.
Cookies and storage in your browser
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. Until you choose, and if you choose "Only necessary", the site uses only the storage it needs to work:
- liuk_vid (cookie, 1 year): a random visitor id. It keeps the site the same for you each time you come back, including which version of a page you see while we test two versions.
- Firebase sign-in session (browser storage): keeps you signed in to your anonymous or email account.
- liuk_consent (cookie and browser storage, 1 year): remembers your cookie choice.
- Your progress (browser storage): your answers on this device, so pages load fast.
Only if you press "Accept":
- Mixpanel (browser storage starting mp_): usage analytics, stored in the EU.
- liuk_attr (cookie, 90 days): the ad and campaign that brought you to the site.
- Google Ads (Google's cookies, such as _gcl_au): tells Google Ads when someone who clicked an advert starts a subscription.
You can change your choice at any time in Settings, under Usage Data. Turning it off stops analytics and the Google Ads tag from that moment. Our lawful basis for these is your consent.
Payments
Full access is a weekly subscription with a 7-day free trial. Payments are handled by Square, our payment processor. You enter your card details on Square's secure checkout page; we never see your full card number. Square tells us your email, whether your subscription is in its trial, active or cancelled, and the amounts and dates of payments, refunds and disputes. Square's own privacy notice covers what Square does with your payment data.
Why we use your data (lawful basis)
To run your account, store your answers, measure your readiness and give you the access you pay for, our basis is the performance of our contract with you. Analytics and advertising measurement happen only with your consent, which you can withdraw in Settings. We keep payment records because the law requires it.
Data sharing
We do not sell your data and we never will. We share it only with the companies that run the site for us:
- Google (Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Firebase Hosting) stores your account, answers and subscription status on our behalf.
- Square processes your payments and your subscription.
- Mixpanel receives usage events, only if you accept.
- Google Ads receives the click id of the advert you came from when you start a subscription, only if you accept.
Google (Firebase), Square and Mixpanel act as our processors: they may only use the data to provide their service to us.
International transfers
Our Cloud Firestore database is in the United Kingdom (London, europe-west2). Mixpanel uses its European Union data residency. Square and Google may process data outside the UK; where they do, their standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards apply.
Retention and deletion
We keep your data while you use the site, because your readiness score is built from it. You can delete everything yourself at any time: open Settings, then Delete Account. This cancels a running subscription first, so you are not charged again, then deletes your answers, your mock runs, your profile and the account itself, and clears the copy in your browser. It cannot be undone.
We keep the payment records (amounts, dates and order numbers) for 6 years, because UK tax law requires it. If you accepted analytics and want your analytics events removed as well, email us and we will ask Mixpanel to delete them.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you (access);
- have it corrected (rectification);
- have it deleted (erasure): the Delete Account button does this at once;
- receive a copy in a portable format (portability);
- ask us to restrict or stop certain processing (restriction and objection);
- withdraw your consent to analytics at any time, in Settings.
To use any of these rights, email hello@somewherein.city. If you have not signed in with your email, please write from the browser you use for the site, so we can find the right account.
If you are not happy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator: ico.org.uk, helpline 0303 123 1113. We would like the chance to put it right first.
Children
The site is made for adults preparing for the Life in the UK test. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has used the site, email us and we will delete the data.
Changes
If we change what we collect or who we share it with, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change needs your consent, the cookie banner will ask you again.
